About this card
This is one of the fifty-seven two-player Rookie Stars cards in the 1964 Topps set: fifty-three pair two prospects from one club, and the four league cards (#548, #564, #568 and #572) pair prospects from two clubs. Every one of them is a rookie card for at least one of its two players.
The story on this card
Bakenhaster's rookie season opened with the Cardinals keeping him on the big-league roster under bonus-signing rules rather than sending him to the minors. He made his major league debut on June 20, 1964, against the San Francisco Giants and his only other appearance on July 22 against the Pittsburgh Pirates, allowing a two-run homer to Bill Mazeroski, before St. Louis sent him down the next day. This card shares its multi-player Rookie Stars spot with fellow Cardinals rookie Johnny Lewis, drawn from the set's sixth print series as a recognized rookie card. A prized $40,000 bonus signing out of a Columbus, Ohio high school where he threw nine no-hitters, kept on the Cardinals' roster as a teenager in 1964.
Lewis broke in with the Cardinals in 1964, debuting against the Dodgers in April and starting 20 of the team's first 25 games before a hairline ankle fracture and a midseason slump sent him to Triple-A. This Rookie Stars card, from the sixth print series, pairs him with fellow Cardinals farmhand Dave Bakenhaster and marks his recognized rookie card. An outfielder known as The Gunner for his throwing arm, best remembered for an 11th-inning homer that spoiled a Jim Maloney no-hit bid in 1965.

Why is #479 harder to find?

587 cards, tracked as 589 collectible states. Numbers run from 1 to 587 with no gaps, and no number carries two different cards; two cards - #4, the A.L. Pitching Leaders, and #517, the seventh-series checklist - carry a catalogued back variation that the master set counts separately.
