1964 Topps #289 Frank Funk

About Frank Funk
Card #289 lands in the fourth series; Topps had been printing Funk since 1961. It looks back on his only National League season: 3-3 with a 2.68 ERA over 25 games and 43 2/3 innings for Bobby Bragan's Braves, a club that went 84-78 and finished sixth. By the time the fourth series reached the shelves he was gone from the majors for good, having thrown his last big-league pitch on September 22, 1963. He kept working, pitching in the minor leagues through 1969, but this was the last card of his playing days in the decade's Topps sets.
Franklin Ray Funk, a right-handed pitcher out of Washington, D.C., was born August 30, 1935 and signed with the New York Giants as an amateur free agent in 1954. His road to the majors ran through Toronto of the Triple-A International League, which picked him up before the 1959 season and sold his contract to Cleveland in August 1960. Funk debuted for the Indians on September 3, 1960, and he never started a big-league game: all 137 of his appearances came in relief, and he finished 20-17 with a 3.01 ERA, 150 strikeouts and 18 saves. Cleveland shipped him to the Milwaukee Braves in a November 1962 trade for Joe Adcock and Jack Curtis, and the 1963 season in Milwaukee was his last in the majors, though he kept pitching in the minor leagues through 1969. Coaching filled the decades that followed. He managed in the minors and worked as a big-league bullpen or pitching coach for the San Francisco Giants, the Seattle Mariners, the Kansas City Royals and the Colorado Rockies between 1976 and 1998.
