About Johnny Keane

Card #413 shows Keane with the Cardinals and falls in Topps' fifth series. Keane's playing days never got past the minors. It rides the season that defined him: after a sluggish start, Devine and Keane pulled the trigger on the Ernie Broglio-for-Lou Brock trade, Busch forced Devine out in August, and the Cardinals ran down the collapsing Phillies to clinch the pennant on the final day of the season, then beat the Yankees in a seven-game World Series. The Sporting News named Keane National League Manager of the Year. At the press conference the day after Game Seven, he handed Busch a letter of resignation instead.

John Joseph Keane was born November 3, 1911, in St. Louis, Missouri. He signed with the Cardinals organization in 1930 and spent his playing career as a shortstop in their farm system, never reaching the majors; a beaning at Houston in July 1935 fractured his skull and left him unconscious for six days. He turned to managing in 1938 and went 1,357-1,166 over seventeen seasons with Cardinals farm clubs before joining the big-league staff as third-base coach in 1959. Keane replaced Solly Hemus as Cardinals manager on July 6, 1961. In 1964 he guided St. Louis to the National League pennant and a seven-game World Series win over the New York Yankees, then stunned the club by resigning the day after the victory; the Yankees hired him four days later. The aging New York roster slid to a losing record in 1965, and the club fired him in May 1966 after a 4-16 start. He finished 398-350 as a major-league manager and died of a heart attack on January 6, 1967, at his Houston home, age 55.

587 cards, tracked as 589 collectible states. Numbers run from 1 to 587 with no gaps, and no number carries two different cards; two cards - #4, the A.L. Pitching Leaders, and #517, the seventh-series checklist - carry a catalogued back variation that the master set counts separately.
