The story on this card

1965 Topps #409 pairs Beauchamp with Larry Dierker as a Houston Astros Rookie Stars card in the set's fifth print series, under an ASTROS pennant. Beauchamp opened 1965 as Houston's Opening Day right fielder and pushed his average as high as .308 in early May, but he cooled off and was traded to the Milwaukee Braves with pitcher Ken Johnson for outfielder Lee Maye before the season was out. Oklahoma-born first baseman and outfielder who bounced between five organizations across a ten-year career, then spent decades coaching for the Atlanta Braves after his playing days ended.

In his first full season, Dierker went 7-8 with a 3.50 ERA and 109 strikeouts over 146.2 innings across 26 appearances for Houston. His 1965 Topps card, #409, is a multi-player Rookie Stars issue from the fifth print series, pairing Dierker with fellow rookie Jim Beauchamp, each shown with his own name and Houston club. It is a recognized rookie card for Dierker. A 17-year-old bonus signing who struck out Willie Mays in his 1964 debut, Larry Dierker became Houston's first 20-game winner in 1969 and a two-time All-Star right-hander.
