The story on this card
Dickson's 1965 Topps card, #286, is a Rookie Stars subset issue in print series four, shared with fellow Athletics pitcher Aurelio Monteagudo; his rookie card had already appeared in 1964. Picked up by Kansas City in the prior November's Rule 5 draft, Dickson appeared in 68 games in 1965, fourth-most in the American League, and won three of five decisions for a 103-loss, last-place club without registering a save. Jim Dickson, a Portland-born relief pitcher, worked four big-league seasons for Houston, Cincinnati and Kansas City from 1963 to 1966, highlighted by a 68-game workload for the 1965 Athletics before later coaching in Italy.
Monteagudo spent most of 1965 starting for the Pacific Coast League's Vancouver Mounties before a September call-up to Kansas City, where he worked four relief outings. He was on the mound for the Athletics on September 8, 1965, the day Bert Campaneris played all nine positions in a single game. This shared Rookie Stars card, from the set's fourth print series, pairs him with fellow Athletics pitching prospect Jim Dickson. Cuban right-hander who pitched for five big-league clubs across seven seasons, then built a long second career pitching and coaching in the Mexican League and Venezuelan winter ball.
