About Bob Chance

Card #224 comes from the third print series, and the trophy in its corner marks his 1964 Topps All-Star Rookie selection, not rookie-card status. Cleveland had sent him and Woodie Held to Washington on December 1, 1964, for Chuck Hinton, and Gil Hodges called his new first baseman the sort of hitter who could lead the league. Chance batted .283 in April, slipped in May, and was farmed out to the club's new Triple-A Hawaii affiliate just before the All-Star break, finishing at .256 in 72 games.

Bob Chance was a big, left-handed-hitting first baseman and outfielder from Statesboro, Georgia, signed by the Giants in 1960 and taken by Cleveland in the 1961 first-year player draft. He won the Eastern League Triple Crown at Class AA Charleston in 1963 and was called up that September. His 1964 rookie year with the Indians was the high point of a six-season major league career: 277 games, a .261 average, 24 home runs, 112 runs batted in. In Washington he fought his weight and a crowded first base, opening three straight seasons with the Senators and being sent down in each of them while he kept hitting at Triple-A Hawaii and Buffalo. He played 1969 and 1970 in Japan for the Sankei/Yakult Atoms, and died in Charleston, West Virginia, in 2013 at 73.
