1965 Topps #86 Les Narum

About Les Narum
Narum opened 1965 by beating the Red Sox in Washington's second game but struggled through the rest of the season, spending much of May in the bullpen. A hard-luck outing in Kansas City on July 31 saw him carry a hitless bid into the sixth before a hit-by-pitch forced him out with a no-decision. He finished 4-12 with a 4.46 ERA in 46 appearances for the Senators, prompting manager Gil Hodges to call him strong as a bull but inconsistent down the stretch. This 1965 Topps #86 pictures him with the Washington Senators.
Leslie "Buster" Narum was a right-handed pitcher from Clearwater, Florida, who signed with the Baltimore Orioles at 17 for a $25,000 bonus in 1958. He broke in with Baltimore in 1963, and on May 3 of that year became just the second American League pitcher to homer in his first major league at-bat, taking Detroit's Don Mossi deep at Tiger Stadium. Traded to the Washington Senators in the deal that later brought Lou Piniella to Baltimore, Narum settled into the Senators' rotation and threw a career-high 199 innings in 1964. He worked with former All-Star Sid Hudson to add a curveball to his arsenal in the mid-1960s and closed his career with two starts against Baltimore in September 1967, beating the Orioles in his final big league outing. Over five seasons he went 14-27 with a 4.45 ERA in 96 games, adding three home runs among his seven career hits in 118 at-bats.
