About Bob Saverine

Saverine's 1965 Topps card, #427 from the fifth series, still carries an Orioles cap, but he never played a big-league inning that year. Baltimore assigned him outright to Triple-A Rochester before the season, a bitter pill for a player who had banked on his bonus keeping him up, and he stayed with the Red Wings all summer, batting .267 with 31 stolen bases in 135 games. Teammate Darold Knowles credited him with fixing his control after Saverine caught a bullpen session and noticed the pitcher's head was moving. Once the season ended, Rochester shipped him to Oklahoma City, Houston's top farm club, to complete the April trade that had brought Don Larsen to Baltimore, though he never reported there.

Robert Paul Saverine, born June 2, 1941 in Norwalk, Connecticut, signed with the Baltimore Orioles as an amateur free agent in 1959 for a $70,000 bonus after starring in baseball and basketball at Darien High School. A switch-hitting infielder-outfielder nicknamed Rabbit for his speed, he reached the majors that September as an 18-year-old pinch-runner and came around to score. He led the Appalachian League in batting at .353 as a rookie pro and stole 41 bases for Little Rock in 1961, then settled in as the utilityman: three infield positions and two outfield spots. Assigned outright to Triple-A Rochester in 1965 and drafted by Washington out of the Houston organization that November, he spent 1966 and 1967 with the Senators, where he and 6-foot-7 Frank Howard also played on a team basketball squad. Over six major-league seasons and 379 games, Saverine hit .239 with 6 home runs and 23 stolen bases. He retired after a 1968 season at Triple-A Buffalo, then worked roughly two decades as a stockbroker.
