About Dallas Green

Dallas Green's 1965 Topps card, #203, is a third-series card showing him with the Philadelphia Phillies. The 1964 season behind it was his hardest. Used strictly in relief across all 25 of his appearances, he worked in a bullpen with Johnny Klippstein, Ed Roebuck, and Jack Baldschun until a four-run outing against the Cardinals on July 25 brought a demotion to Triple-A Arkansas. Recalled in September, he watched the Phillies blow a late lead and finish 92-70, one game behind the Cardinals, and he ended the year 2-1 with a 5.79 ERA in 42 innings. He would not pitch in Philadelphia again until 1967; the day before the 1965 season opened, the Phillies sold him to the expansion Washington Senators.

Dallas Green pitched parts of eight big league seasons, from 1960 through 1967, for the Philadelphia Phillies, Washington Senators, and New York Mets, finishing 20-22 with a 4.26 ERA and 268 strikeouts in 185 games. A 6-foot-5 right-hander from Newport, Delaware, he starred as a pitcher and right fielder at the University of Delaware, going 6-0 with an 0.88 ERA as a junior in 1955 before Phillies scout Jocko Collins signed him that summer. Arm and shoulder trouble that began at Buffalo in May 1959 followed him the rest of his playing days and kept him from matching his early promise, though he gave the Phillies steady work as a spot starter and long reliever while the club climbed from 47-107 in 1961 to a pennant race in 1964. Local legend in Delaware gave him the nickname Spider for his height and long arms. He became far better known after he stopped pitching, managing the 1980 Phillies to the first World Series title in franchise history and, as Chicago Cubs general manager, building the 1984 club that won the NL East. He is not a National Baseball Hall of Fame member, though he was inducted into the Delaware Sports Hall of Fame in 1983.
