1965 Topps #296 Tony Taylor

About Tony Taylor
Taylor opened 1965 as the regular second baseman, but on May 31 Don Cardwell, the pitcher Philadelphia had sent to Chicago for him five years earlier, hit him twice on the forearm, and Cookie Rojas took over most of the work at the position from there. It was Taylor's worst season at the plate: .229 with 74 hits, 14 doubles, 27 RBIs and five steals in 106 games, 86 of them at second base. 1965 Topps #296 is a series-4 card with the Phillies.
Tony Taylor was a Cuban-born second baseman who spent 19 major league seasons, the bulk of them with the Philadelphia Phillies. He turned pro in 1954, came up through the New York Giants farm system, and jumped straight from the minors to the Chicago Cubs' starting second base job in 1958. Chicago sent him to Philadelphia with Cal Neeman in May 1960 for Don Cardwell and Ed Bouchee, and that summer he was named to the National League All-Star team, playing in both of the two All-Star Games staged that year, the only All-Star honor of his career. In Philadelphia he became the everyday second baseman and leadoff man, prized for his speed, steady glove and willingness to move to third base or first base when the roster needed it. He finished with a .261 average, 2,007 hits and 234 stolen bases, one of the most durable and popular Phillies of his era despite mostly losing teams. Traded to the Detroit Tigers in 1971, he returned to Philadelphia as a free agent for his final three seasons, then coached for the Phillies, Giants and Marlins across nearly three decades. He entered the Cuban Baseball Hall of Fame in 1981 and the Phillies Wall of Fame in 2002.
