1965 Topps #280 Dick Stuart

About Dick Stuart
Card #5, a first-series League Leaders card, lists the 1964 American League RBI men: Brooks Robinson first at 118, Stuart second at 114, then Mickey Mantle and Harmon Killebrew at 111 apiece. Robinson took the MVP that season; Stuart hit .279 with 33 home runs and committed 24 errors, leading his league in that category for the seventh straight year. Card #280, from the fourth series, shows him with the Philadelphia Phillies, who got him from Boston for left-hander Dennis Bennett at the 1964 winter meetings. He batted .234 with 28 home runs and 95 RBIs in his one Philadelphia season.
Dick Stuart was a right-handed slugging first baseman who played in the majors from 1958 to 1969 for the Pittsburgh Pirates, Boston Red Sox, Philadelphia Phillies, New York Mets, Los Angeles Dodgers and California Angels, with two seasons in Japan for the Taiyo Whales in between. Born in San Francisco and raised in San Carlos, he turned down two college scholarships to sign with Pittsburgh in June 1951 for a $10,000 bonus out of Sequoia High School in Redwood City. In the minors he set a Western League record with 66 home runs for the 1956 Lincoln Chiefs, and he reached Pittsburgh in July 1958, homering in his first big league game. He was the Pirates' regular first baseman for the 1960 World Series champions, made both National League All-Star squads in 1961, and led the American League with 118 RBIs for Boston in 1963, the year he became the first player to hit 30 home runs in a season in both leagues. His bat never covered for his glove: he led his league in errors by a first baseman seven straight years, which brought the nicknames Dr. Strangeglove and Stone Fingers. He retired with 228 home runs, 743 RBIs and a .264 average.
