1965 Topps #279 Dick Tracewski

About Dick Tracewski
The 1965 season brought Tracewski a second Dodgers championship: he backed up Jim Lefebvre at second base, pinch-hit for pitcher Bob Miller in Game 2 of the World Series, and appeared in six of the seven games against Minnesota after Lefebvre was hurt. He was also on the field for Sandy Koufax's perfect game against the Cubs that September. Card #279, from the fourth series, pictures him with Los Angeles.
Dick Tracewski was a utility infielder who spent eight big league seasons split between the Los Angeles Dodgers and Detroit Tigers, playing shortstop, second base and third base. Signed by Brooklyn out of Pennsylvania in 1953, he needed six minor league seasons plus two years of military duty before debuting in 1962 in the first-ever series at the new Dodger Stadium. He was a steady reserve on the Dodgers' 1963 and 1965 championship clubs, then went to Detroit in a trade for pitcher Phil Regan and helped the Tigers win the 1968 World Series. He retired as a player after the 1969 season with a .213 career average, then spent parts of three decades coaching for Detroit, including two brief stretches as interim manager. Teammates nicknamed him for his acrobatics at team pool parties.
