1965 Topps #112 Derrell Griffith

About Derrell Griffith
Griffith's 1965 Topps card followed the best season of his career, the 1964 campaign in which he started at both third base and in the outfield for the Dodgers and hit .290. Card #112 falls in the set's second print series and is recognized as his rookie card. He would go on to see limited 1965 action himself, taking over in left field in May after Tommy Davis's broken ankle before losing the job within weeks.
Robert Derrell Griffith was an outfielder and third baseman who spent parts of four seasons with the Los Angeles Dodgers, from a one-game callup in September 1963 through 1966. Born in Anadarko, Oklahoma, he batted left and threw right, attended Southwestern Oklahoma State University, and signed with the Dodgers before the 1962 season after strong showings at every minor league level. His only extended big league stretch came in 1964, when he started 35 games at third base and 29 more in the outfield, hitting .290 with four home runs and 16 doubles. He got a shot at the everyday left field job in 1965 after Tommy Davis broke an ankle, but lost it within weeks and returned to Triple-A. A shoulder injury suffered in 1966, which he kept private for decades, limited him to one more hit before he went back to the minors. The Dodgers traded him with Tommy Davis to the New York Mets after 1966; he never stuck in the majors again and closed out his career in the Astros' and Braves' farm systems in 1967. He finished with a .260 career average over 124 games.
