About Nate Oliver

Card #59 comes out of the 1965 set's first series - a plain low number; Oliver had already turned up on a Rookie Stars panel two years earlier. It is his first Topps card to himself. The back recapped the busiest year he would ever have in the majors: called up from Spokane in mid-June 1964, he set career highs of 99 games, 321 at-bats, 78 hits, 28 runs, nine doubles, 21 RBI and seven stolen bases while batting .243. That same summer he sang the national anthem before a Dodgers-Reds game.

Nathaniel Oliver (December 13, 1940 - April 5, 2025) was a right-handed infielder from St. Petersburg, Florida who spent parts of seven major league seasons in the 1960s, mostly with the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Dodgers signed him out of Gibbs High School on June 10, 1959; he hit .329 at Great Falls in 1960, reached Triple-A Spokane in 1961 and moved to second base there in 1962, a sensible switch with Maury Wills locked in at shortstop. Oliver reached the majors in 1963 and stayed with the club through 1967, shuttling between Los Angeles and Spokane most years. He went to the San Francisco Giants in February 1968, to the New York Yankees that December and to the Chicago Cubs the following April, then retired after two more minor league seasons in 1971. He hit .226 with 2 home runs and 45 RBI in 410 games, 291 of them at second base. Oliver worked for Bank of America and the Bay Area Rapid Transit system before returning to the game in 1988, managing and coaching in the minors for the Angels and Cubs into the 2000s. The son of Negro leagues player Jim Oliver Sr., he was also a singer, asked to perform the national anthem at a 1990 Dodgers old-timers game after Ella Fitzgerald cancelled.
