1965 Topps #585 Hank Fischer

About Hank Fischer
The 1965 card reports the best year Fischer had. He went 11-10 in 1964 with a 4.01 ERA and nine complete games, and his five shutouts tied him for second in the National League with Jim Bunning, Don Drysdale and Vern Law, behind Sandy Koufax's seven. One was a two-hit, 1-0 win against Philadelphia on May 3 in which he drove in the game's only run. Card #585 is a seventh-series high number, printed inside the short-print zone that runs from 523 to the closing card at 598.
Henry William Fischer was born January 11, 1940, in Yonkers, New York. As a schoolboy in 1957 he threw three no-hitters and carried Roosevelt High School to the city baseball championship, then took the first Louis J. Flowers Memorial Award as the city's outstanding schoolboy athlete; the nickname 'Bulldog' came from the way he played basketball. Seton Hall basketball coach John 'Honey' Russell, a Milwaukee Braves scout, recommended him, and the right-hander signed before the 1959 season. At Cedar Rapids in 1960 he led the Three-I League with 217 strikeouts and a 2.01 ERA, reaching Triple-A Louisville a year later. Fischer pitched six major-league seasons for the Braves in Milwaukee and Atlanta, the Cincinnati Reds and the Boston Red Sox, going 30-39 with a 4.23 ERA and 369 strikeouts in 168 games; one year as a rotation regular held 28 of his 77 career starts. Boston released him after the 1967 season, and at 28 he went into the restaurant business in West Palm Beach, Florida.

Frequently asked questions
What is the 1965 Topps #585 card?
It is card #585 of the 598-card 1965 Topps Baseball set, picturing Hank Fischer of the Milwaukee Braves.
Is 1965 Topps #585 a scarce card?
It is a high number card from the seventh and last series, #507-598. Unlike most 1960s Topps sets the 1965 highs are not scarce as a run - the premium sits on the short-printed cards inside #523-598. It is also a short-print zone card. Forty-four of the 76 cards in #523-598 were short-printed; #507-522 was not. The zone is stated as a range because the catalogs disagree on exactly which cards, so no single card is marked.
How many cards are in the 1965 Topps Baseball set?
598 cards, tracked as 600 collectible states. Numbers run from 1 to 598 with no gaps and no printed-number collisions, and two checklist cards - #79 and #508 - carry catalogued print variations that the master set counts separately.
