About Tommy McCraw

Card #586 in Topps' seventh and final series of 1965 shows McCraw during a season in which he appeared in 133 games for the Chicago White Sox, splitting duty between first base and the outfield while batting .238 with 5 home runs and 21 RBI. It is a high number inside that year's short-print zone, and the card back misspells his name as "McGraw."

Tommy Lee McCraw, born November 21, 1940 in Malvern, Arkansas, was a left-handed first baseman and outfielder who spent thirteen big-league seasons in the majors. He broke in with the Chicago White Sox in 1963 and anchored their infield and outfield through 1970, then moved on to the Washington Senators, Cleveland Indians and California Angels before finishing his playing days with Cleveland in 1975. Across 1,468 games he batted .246 with 75 home runs, 404 RBI and 143 stolen bases. He was the first player in Angels history to serve as designated hitter, going 1-for-4 in that role on Opening Day 1973. After retiring as a player, McCraw built a long second career as a batting coach, spending 24 seasons on major league staffs with the Indians, Giants, Orioles, Mets, Astros and the Expos/Nationals franchise, serving under manager Frank Robinson on four different clubs.
