The story on this card

Bill Davis's 1965 Topps card arrives in the high-numbered seventh series, inside the short-print zone, as part of a multi-player Cleveland Indians Rookie Stars card, shared with Mike Hedlund, Floyd Weaver and Ray Barker. It is a recognized rookie card for Davis, timed to his September 1965 recall to Cleveland after he hit .311 with 33 home runs for the Triple-A Portland Beavers and shared Pacific Coast League Rookie of the Year honors. A 6-foot-7 first baseman from Minnesota who reached the majors with Cleveland in 1965, Davis hit his only career home run as a pinch hitter in 1966 and started the Padres' first-ever regular season game in 1969.

Just eighteen, Hedlund made his major league debut for Cleveland on May 8, 1965 against Boston, appearing in six games and throwing 5.1 innings before a return to the minors. This card, #546, is a high number from the set's seventh and final series, inside its short-print zone, and puts him on a multi-player Rookie Stars panel with Bill Davis, Floyd Weaver and Ray Barker, and it is his rookie card. A Dallas-born right-hander who debuted with Cleveland at eighteen, then anchored the expansion Royals' rotation, peaking with a 15-8, 2.71 ERA season in 1971 alongside Dick Drago and Paul Splittorff.

Card 546 is a high number from the set's seventh series, inside its short-print zone, teaming Weaver with three other young players -- Bill Davis, Mike Hedlund, and Ray Barker -- on a Rookie Stars card under the Cleveland Indians banner. It was Weaver's first Topps card, arriving in the same season he returned to Cleveland's roster following his brief 1962 debut, and it stands as his recognized rookie card. Right-handed Texas pitcher whose 21-strikeout college game at Grand Junction is still a collegiate record; he worked mostly in relief for Cleveland, the White Sox, and the Brewers.

Card #546 is a four-player Indians Rookie Stars slot, Barker sharing the front with Bill Davis, Mike Hedlund, and Floyd Weaver. The Cleveland tie was brief: 11 games and no hits in six at-bats before the Indians traded him to the Yankees for infielder Pedro Gonzalez in May 1965. That swap made his year. With Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris hurt and Joe Pepitone pushed to the outfield, Barker played 98 games in New York, hit .254 with 7 home runs and 31 RBI, and tied a big league record with home runs in consecutive pinch-hit at-bats. Buddy Barker was a left-handed first baseman from West Virginia who spent a decade hitting home runs in Triple-A before injuries to Mantle and Maris finally opened first base for the 1965 Yankees. Four big league seasons, .214.

It is card #546 of the 598-card 1965 Topps Baseball set, picturing Bill Davis, Mike Hedlund, Floyd Weaver and Ray Barker. This is one of the 55 Rookie Stars cards in the 1965 Topps set, each picturing two to four young players - 126 players in all - under a team banner, except #577 and #581, which carry American League and National League banners over players from three clubs. Is 1965 Topps #546 a rookie card?

Yes - #546 is the rookie card of Bill Davis, Mike Hedlund and Floyd Weaver. Ray Barker had already appeared on an earlier Topps card, so it is not his rookie card.

Is 1965 Topps #546 a scarce card?

It is a high number card from the seventh and last series, #507-598. Unlike most 1960s Topps sets the 1965 highs are not scarce as a run - the premium sits on the short-printed cards inside #523-598. It is also a short-print zone card. Forty-four of the 76 cards in #523-598 were short-printed; #507-522 was not. The zone is stated as a range because the catalogs disagree on exactly which cards, so no single card is marked.

How many cards are in the 1965 Topps Baseball set?

598 cards, tracked as 600 collectible states. Numbers run from 1 to 598 with no gaps and no printed-number collisions, and two checklist cards - #79 and #508 - carry catalogued print variations that the master set counts separately.
