1965 Topps #545 Jesus Alou

About Jesus Alou
1965 Topps #545 is a high number from the set's seventh and final print series, inside its short-print zone, issued for Alou's finest season with the Giants. He set career highs across the board that year: 143 games, 543 at-bats, 162 hits, 76 runs, 52 RBI and nine home runs, batting .298 while striking out only 40 times.
Jesus Alou was a Dominican outfielder who played 15 major league seasons, the youngest of three baseball-playing brothers alongside Felipe and Matty Alou. Signed by the San Francisco Giants as a teenager out of Bajos de Haina, he worked his way up through the minors with strong batting averages and reached the majors in September 1963, joining a Giants outfield that briefly included all three brothers at once. He was a contact hitter who rarely struck out and rarely walked, a free swinger whose approach frustrated managers even as it produced steady batting averages. After six years in San Francisco he moved on to the Houston Astros, then the Oakland Athletics, where he was a bench player on two World Series champions, before finishing his career with the New York Mets and a return to Houston. He survived a frightening on-field collision in 1969 that left him briefly unconscious. After retiring he spent decades working in scouting and player development for the Expos, Marlins and Red Sox.

Frequently asked questions
What is the 1965 Topps #545 card?
It is card #545 of the 598-card 1965 Topps Baseball set, picturing Jesus Alou of the San Francisco Giants.
Is 1965 Topps #545 a scarce card?
It is a high number card from the seventh and last series, #507-598. Unlike most 1960s Topps sets the 1965 highs are not scarce as a run - the premium sits on the short-printed cards inside #523-598. It is also a short-print zone card. Forty-four of the 76 cards in #523-598 were short-printed; #507-522 was not. The zone is stated as a range because the catalogs disagree on exactly which cards, so no single card is marked.
How many cards are in the 1965 Topps Baseball set?
598 cards, tracked as 600 collectible states. Numbers run from 1 to 598 with no gaps and no printed-number collisions, and two checklist cards - #79 and #508 - carry catalogued print variations that the master set counts separately.
