About Howie Reed

Reed won a roster spot with the 1965 Dodgers and turned in his best big-league season, going 7-5 with a 3.12 ERA across 38 games, five as a starter. Los Angeles won the National League pennant, and Reed pitched in the World Series against the Minnesota Twins, throwing scoreless relief in Game 1 before the Dodgers won the title in seven games. This card is part of print series 7, a high number inside the short-print zone, and it is also recognized as his rookie card.

Howard Dean Reed was a right-handed pitcher from Dallas, Texas who spent ten seasons in the majors between 1958 and 1971. Signed by the Kansas City Athletics, he debuted in relief in September 1958 and, in his first big-league start later that month, threw a complete-game win over Early Wynn, but did not stick in Kansas City and spent most of the early 1960s winning games for Spokane in the Pacific Coast League. The Dodgers acquired him in a trade for Ed Rakow in 1961 and recalled him in June 1964. He wore Roy Campanella's old No. 39 in Los Angeles and pitched a career-high seven wins for the pennant-winning 1965 club before a May 1966 trade sent him to the Angels. After more minor league seasons with Houston's system, he found a longer big-league home with the expansion Montreal Expos from 1969 to 1971, working mostly in relief. He finished with a 26-29 record, 268 strikeouts and nine saves over 229 games. After retiring he worked for Seagram's and in Expos broadcasting before returning to his family farm in Texas, where he died in 1984 at age 47.
