The story on this card
Guindon's rookie card, number 509, arrived the spring after his brief September 1964 callup, during which he went 1-for-8 with a double in five games as a first baseman, outfielder, pinch hitter, and pinch runner for the Red Sox. Topps paired him on a Boston Red Sox Rookie Stars card with fellow prospect Gerry Vezendy, part of the 1965 set's seventh and final print series, a high number issued late in the year. A record-bonus Red Sox signee out of Boston English High, Guindon got a nine-day taste of the majors in September 1964 before a decade in the minors.
Card #509, part of print series 7, a high number and a recognized rookie card, pairs Vezendy with fellow Red Sox farmhand Bob Guindon as Red Sox Rookie Stars. Both men represent the Boston Red Sox on the card. It came out as Vezendy was already struggling: after a promising 1964 with Wellsville and Winston-Salem, he opened 1965 at Double-A Pittsfield with an 0-3 record and 26 walks in just 22 innings, was waived by Boston that June, and finished the year in the Cardinals' Class A system at Raleigh. Right-handed pitcher from Pennsylvania whose strong 1964 debut for the Red Sox organization was undone by wildness and arm trouble before he reached the majors.
