About Tom Haller

Card #465 comes from Topps' sixth series but stops short of the 1965 high numbers, so it is neither a high number nor a semi-high. Haller's season was his busiest yet -- 134 games, 125 of them starts behind the plate, with 16 home runs and 49 RBI in Herman Franks' first year as manager -- and he led National League catchers in putouts. The rivalry stole the headlines: Juan Marichal swung his bat at John Roseboro's head that August, and the Giants ripped off 14 straight wins from September 4 through 16 to lead by four and a half, only for Los Angeles to win 15 of its last 16 and finish two games ahead.

Tom Haller was a catcher who spent twelve major league seasons (1961-1972), most of them as the primary receiver for the San Francisco Giants before finishing with the Los Angeles Dodgers and Detroit Tigers. Born in Lockport, Illinois, on June 23, 1937, he starred as a football quarterback at the University of Illinois, then signed with the Giants in 1958 and spent three seasons in their farm system before debuting in April 1961. Known for a strong throwing arm, sure hands and a reputation as an unusually cerebral game-caller, he earned three straight All-Star selections from 1966 through 1968 and caught staffs built around Juan Marichal and Gaylord Perry. He finished with a .257 average, 134 home runs and 504 RBI in 1,294 games. His older brother Bill became an American League umpire, and in July 1972 the two worked the same game as catcher and plate umpire, the first time brothers had done so. After retiring he returned to the Giants as a coach, farm director and vice president of baseball operations, and later served as general manager of the Chicago White Sox. He died in Los Angeles in 2004, and in 2008 was named to the inaugural class of the San Francisco Giants Wall of Fame.
