The story on this card
Sent to the Triple-A Hawaii Islanders that spring, Craig went 14-11 before Washington recalled him on September 4, 1965. He started and lost all three of his appearances that month, allowing 13 earned runs in 14.1 innings against an 8.16 ERA. In a September 15 outing against the Yankees, Clete Boyer took him deep, but Craig retired Mickey Mantle on a groundout and nearly homered himself off Mel Stottlemyre. This 1965 Topps Rookie Stars card, number 466 from the sixth print series, is shared with fellow Senators farmhand and Hawaii teammate Dick Nen, and is a recognized rookie card for Craig. Canadian right-hander from LaSalle, Ontario, who pitched for the Washington Senators in brief September call-ups across three seasons before a shoulder injury ended his career.
Nen's 1965 Topps card, #466, is a Rookie Stars issue from series 6 shared with Senators farmhand Pete Craig. It marks his first season in Washington after the December 1964 trade that sent Frank Howard to Washington and Claude Osteen to Los Angeles. Splitting first base duty for the Senators that year, Nen played 69 games, batting .260 with 6 home runs, 31 RBI and 18 runs, easily his best offensive season. Dick Nen was a left-handed first baseman for the Dodgers, Senators and Cubs whose pinch-hit home run off Ron Taylor helped Los Angeles beat the Cardinals during the 1963 pennant race, though he missed that year's World Series roster.
