About this card

The story on this card
Card #553 is a high number in the seventh and final series of the 1966 Topps set, a cross-team Rookie Stars issue pairing Garrett, then a Braves farmhand, with Angels prospect Jackie Warner. Topps printed him as 'Pat Garrett'; card researchers and Baseball-Reference know him as Adrian 'Smokey' Garrett, the same man, not a second player. TCDB counts this as his rookie card, issued the year he broke in with Atlanta. Henry Adrian 'Smokey' Garrett hit just .185 across parts of eight big league seasons (1966-76) with four clubs, but he was one of pro ball's great minor league sluggers - 400-plus home runs worldwide, including three star seasons in Japan.
With his rookie season underway, Warner returned on 1966 Topps #553, another high number from series seven, sharing a Rookie Stars panel with Braves prospect Pat Garrett - the two players represented different clubs on the same card, one of only two Rookie Stars cards that season to mix clubs. It captured Warner during his only big league campaign, played entirely with the Angels. A California Angels outfielder for one season in 1966, John "Jackie" Warner hit .211 with 7 home runs in 45 games before a trade to Kansas City ended his big league career without another appearance.

Where SGC registers no separate row for a variation state, its slabs of that card are listed under the base state.

Frequently asked questions
What is the 1966 Topps #553 card?
It is card #553 of the 598-card 1966 Topps Baseball set, picturing Pat Garrett and Jackie Warner. The 46 Rookie Stars cards group a club's prospects under one number - except #553, which mixes Braves and Angels, and #591 NL Rookie Stars, which mixes Dodgers and Phillies. The class is headlined by #254 (Ferguson Jenkins, with Bill Sorrell) and #288 (Don Sutton, with Bill Singer).
Is 1966 Topps #553 a rookie card?
Yes - #553 is the rookie card of Pat Garrett. Jackie Warner had already appeared on an earlier Topps card, so it is not his rookie card.
Who is the Pat Garrett on #553?
Adrian (Smokey) Garrett, who debuted for Atlanta in April 1966 and played eleven seasons - Topps printed his name as Pat, and the rookie-card credit on #553 is his alone (Jackie Warner is not credited with a rookie card on it). #553 is one of only two Rookie Stars cards in the set that mix two clubs: Garrett is a Brave and Warner an Angel (the other is #591, Dodgers and Phillies).
Why is #553 harder to find?
It is a high number card from the seventh and last print series, #523-598 - the scarce end of the set. Forty-three of its 76 cards are short prints, so scarcity is stated for the series as a whole.
How many cards are in the 1966 Topps Baseball set?
598 cards, tracked as 613 collectible states. Numbers run from 1 to 598 with no gaps and no number used twice, and 14 cards carry catalogued print variations - five checklists, the trade and sold statement backs, the three-state #43 Don Landrum, three team-card dot pairs and the #161 Jerry Lumpe white streak - that the master set counts separately.
