The story on this card
1966 was Larry Stahl's first full big-league season, as he appeared in 119 games for the Kansas City Athletics and batted .250 with five home runs and 34 RBI, seeing most of his time in the outfield. It was during this season that he hit an estimated 503-foot home run at Municipal Stadium, the longest ever measured there. His 1966 Topps card is a multi-player Rookie Stars issue shared with fellow Athletics prospect Ron Tompkins. A steady left-handed outfielder for Kansas City and New York who became a trusted pinch hitter with San Diego and Cincinnati, closing out a decade in the majors by helping the Reds reach the 1973 National League Championship Series.
His first Topps card is 1966 #107, a Rookie Stars pairing with fellow Kansas City prospect Larry Stahl, and it is a recognized rookie card for Tompkins. Topps put him on it on the strength of that five-game September call-up in 1965, and he would not throw another big-league pitch until 1971, which makes #107 a snapshot of an Athletics arm everyone still expected to stick. A San Diego-born right-hander who reached the majors with the Kansas City Athletics in 1965 and the Chicago Cubs in 1971, pitching fifty innings across two seasons without ever winning a big-league game.
