About Ken Harrelson

Harrelson split the 1966 season between Kansas City and Washington after a falling-out with Athletics owner Charlie Finley, appearing in 134 games mostly at first base and batting .237 with 12 home runs and 50 RBI. His 1966 Topps card, #55, from the set's first print series, shows him with the Athletics.

Kenneth Smith Harrelson, born September 4, 1941 in Woodruff, South Carolina, played nine major league seasons (1963-1971) as a first baseman and outfielder for the Kansas City Athletics, Washington Senators, Boston Red Sox and Cleveland Indians. Signed by Kansas City out of high school, he reached the majors in 1963 and became known as "Hawk" for his distinctive profile. Outspoken criticism of Athletics owner Charlie Finley led to his release in 1967, and he signed with Boston for a lucrative sum, helping the Red Sox win the pennant that year before losing the World Series to St. Louis. In 1968 he had his finest season, leading the American League in RBI and earning his only All-Star selection. Traded to Cleveland in 1969, he retired mid-season in 1971 after a broken leg limited his mobility. Harrelson finished with a .239 average, 131 home runs and 421 RBI in 900 games, and is credited with helping popularize the batting glove. He later spent decades as a Chicago White Sox broadcaster.

Where SGC registers no separate row for a variation state, its slabs of that card are listed under the base state.
