About Mike Hershberger

Card 236 is a third-series card in the 1966 Topps set, and it stands over the best offensive season he ever had. Settled into right field for the Kansas City Athletics, he came to bat 538 times, more than in any other year, and finished 146 games with a .253 average, 136 hits, 27 doubles, seven triples and 57 runs batted in; the doubles, triples and RBI figures were all career highs. He also led the American League with seven sacrifice flies, a line that suits a contact hitter who rarely struck out.

Norman Michael Hershberger, born October 9, 1939, in Massillon, Ohio, played eleven major-league seasons as a right-handed outfielder for the Chicago White Sox, the Kansas City and Oakland Athletics and the Milwaukee Brewers, closing out his career with a second stint in Chicago in 1971. He graduated from Massillon Washington High School, where he was a Tiger football halfback, and took a football scholarship to the University of Cincinnati before signing with the White Sox in 1959. He reached the majors on September 5, 1961, and was known above all for his defense and for one of the strongest, most accurate outfield arms of his era. He held a starting corner outfield job for seven straight years, 1962 through 1968, split between Chicago and the Athletics. Over 1,150 games he batted .252 with 900 hits, 150 doubles, 22 triples, 26 home runs and 344 runs batted in, striking out only 311 times in 3,572 at-bats. Massillon named him a Distinguished Citizen in 2021. He died in his hometown on July 1, 2012, at 72.

Where SGC registers no separate row for a variation state, its slabs of that card are listed under the base state.
