1966 Topps #342 Bob Humphreys

About Bob Humphreys
Issued as a Chicago Cub, capturing his one season there before he moved on to Washington. Traded to the Senators just before the 1966 season opened, Humphreys found a home he would keep for four full years, setting career highs that year with 58 appearances and 111.2 innings while going 7-3 with a 2.82 ERA and three saves. Part of the print series 4 run.
Bob Humphreys was a right-handed relief pitcher who spent parts of nine major league seasons, 1962 to 1970, with the Tigers, Cardinals, Cubs, Senators and Brewers. A Hampden-Sydney College graduate from Covington, Virginia, he broke into pro ball in 1958 and reached Detroit in 1962. He is best remembered for the 1964 St. Louis Cardinals, where a midseason call-up from Triple-A turned into a 2-0, 2.53 ERA season out of the bullpen and a scoreless ninth inning in Game Six of that year's World Series, a championship for St. Louis. After stops with the Cubs, he found his longest home with the Washington Senators from 1966 into 1970, relying on a cutter learned from teammate Frank Lary and later a knuckleball. He finished 27-21 with 20 saves and a 3.36 ERA in 319 games. After retiring he coached at Virginia Tech and worked as a minor league pitching instructor and coordinator for several organizations.
