1966 Topps #578 Chi Chi Olivo

About Chi Chi Olivo
The Braves' move to Atlanta in 1966 brought Olivo his busiest big-league season: 47 relief appearances, a 5-4 record, a 4.23 ERA, and seven saves. Roughly 39 years old and carrying extra weight, he still worked in and out of jams on the strength of his screwball. This high-number card, part of the set's seventh and final print series, is a recognized rookie card for Olivo, pairing his first Topps appearance with his new Atlanta club.
Federico "Chi-Chi" Olivo was a Dominican right-hander who spent parts of four seasons with the Braves after breaking in with Milwaukee in 1961. He and his older brother Diomedes both pitched in the majors, though Chi-Chi did not reach the big leagues until his thirties after years in the minors and winter ball. He worked almost exclusively out of the bullpen, relying on a screwball to neutralize left-handed hitters, and picked up his first career win in 1964 after being recalled from Toronto. His busiest big-league stretch came with Atlanta in 1966. Before and around his major-league service he starred for years in the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico, where he ranked among the winningest pitchers in Dominican professional history.

Where SGC registers no separate row for a variation state, its slabs of that card are listed under the base state.
