1966 Topps #398 Danny Cater

About Danny Cater
Card #398, a series-5 issue, again shows Cater with the White Sox. The season it reports was a transition year: Cater split time between Chicago and Kansas City after a midseason trade, moving from the outfield into a first base and third base rotation. Across the two clubs he played 137 games, batting .278 with 7 home runs, 56 RBI and 50 runs scored, seeing 53 games at first base and 42 at third.
Danny Anderson Cater was born February 25, 1940, in Austin, Texas, and signed with the Philadelphia Phillies at age 18 in June 1958. He played twelve major league seasons, 1964-1975, for the Phillies, White Sox, Kansas City/Oakland Athletics, Yankees, Red Sox and Cardinals, filling in at first base, third base and the outfield. He was the 1968 American League batting runner-up at .290, behind Carl Yastrzemski's .301, the lowest average ever to win a major league batting title, and led American League first basemen with a .995 fielding percentage that year. He set a full-season best of .301 for the 1970 Yankees. Traded to Boston before the 1972 season along with Mario Guerrero for reliever Sparky Lyle, he retired with a .276 average, 1,229 hits, 66 home runs and 519 RBI, and later worked at the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts office in Austin.

Graded population — a scarcity guide, not a price. Data as of 2026-09-04. Half grades fold down for both graders (8.5→8); PSA qualified slabs (OC, ST, PD, MC and the like) are not counted. Where SGC registers no separate row for a variation state, its slabs of that card are listed under the base state.
