About Ron Hansen

Card #261 is a third-series number, and the season printed on its back is the sturdiest Hansen ever had. He played all 162 games for the White Sox in 1965, more than any other American Leaguer, batting .235 with 11 home runs, 66 RBIs and 23 doubles while topping American League shortstops in assists for a second straight year. By then he had made himself one of the most consistent infielders in the game and one of the first big men to hold a shortstop job every day, a 6-foot-3 fielder who covered the hole with long strides rather than speed.

Ronald Lavern Hansen was born April 5, 1938, in Oxford, Nebraska, and moved with his family to Albany, California, at age two. He turned down a University of California scholarship and signed with the Baltimore Orioles on April 7, 1956; a ruptured disc and the spinal surgery that followed cost him the entire 1957 season. The 6-foot-3 shortstop debuted with Baltimore on April 15, 1958, and broke out in 1960 with a .255 average, 22 home runs and 86 RBIs, a league-leading 325 putouts at shortstop, the American League Rookie of the Year award and a start in both of that summer's All-Star Games. Traded to the Chicago White Sox in January 1963 in the deal that sent Luis Aparicio to Baltimore, he set a major league record by handling 28 chances in an August 1965 doubleheader. Dealt to the Washington Senators in February 1968, he turned a line drive into the majors' first unassisted triple play in 41 years that July, then closed a 15-year career with the White Sox, New York Yankees and Kansas City Royals, finishing at .234 with 106 home runs and 501 RBIs. He later coached in the majors, managed in the minors and scouted until he retired in 2010.

Where SGC registers no separate row for a variation state, its slabs of that card are listed under the base state.
