About Dick Stuart

Card #480 is a sixth-series card, and it shows Stuart with the New York Mets, who sent three minor leaguers to Philadelphia for him in February 1966. The plan put Ed Kranepool in left field to clear first base for Stuart, and it collapsed fast: Stuart had six errors by June 5 and was released on June 15 hitting .218 with four home runs. He signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers, pinch hit twice in the World Series sweep by Baltimore, then spent 1967 and 1968 with the Taiyo Whales, where Japanese fans called him Moby Dick. It is his last card in Topps' 1960s run.

Dick Stuart was a right-handed slugging first baseman who played in the majors from 1958 to 1969 for the Pittsburgh Pirates, Boston Red Sox, Philadelphia Phillies, New York Mets, Los Angeles Dodgers and California Angels, with two seasons in Japan for the Taiyo Whales in between. Born in San Francisco and raised in San Carlos, he turned down two college scholarships to sign with Pittsburgh in June 1951 for a $10,000 bonus out of Sequoia High School in Redwood City. In the minors he set a Western League record with 66 home runs for the 1956 Lincoln Chiefs, and he reached Pittsburgh in July 1958, homering in his first big league game. He was the Pirates' regular first baseman for the 1960 World Series champions, made both National League All-Star squads in 1961, and led the American League with 118 RBIs for Boston in 1963, the year he became the first player to hit 30 home runs in a season in both leagues. His bat never covered for his glove: he led his league in errors by a first baseman seven straight years, which brought the nicknames Dr. Strangeglove and Stone Fingers. He retired with 228 home runs, 743 RBIs and a .264 average.

Where SGC registers no separate row for a variation state, its slabs of that card are listed under the base state.
