1966 Topps #177 Hector Lopez

About Hector Lopez
#177 sits in the second series of the 1966 Topps set, the sixth and last Lopez card of Topps' 1960s run. Behind it is a 1965 season in which he was the Yankees' regular right fielder, batting .261 in 111 games with seven homers and 39 RBIs while New York finished sixth, its first second-division season since 1925. He played 54 games in 1966, hit .214, and made his final big league appearance on September 30. Released, he spent two more summers in the minors, at Hawaii and then Buffalo.
Hector Headley Lopez Swainson, born July 8, 1929, in Colon, Panama, was a third baseman and outfielder who played twelve major league seasons with the Kansas City Athletics and New York Yankees from 1955 to 1966. The son of a pitcher, he signed out of Panama with a Quebec club in the Class C Provincial League and reached the Athletics organization from there. He became Kansas City's regular third baseman, a right-handed batter who hit to all fields with good power even as he led American League third basemen in errors. Traded to New York in May 1959, he handled all four infield and all three outfield positions over his career and settled in as the Yankees' third outfielder behind Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris. Nicknamed "Hector the Hit Collector" by writer George Vecsey, he batted .269 with 136 home runs and 591 RBIs, played on five straight pennant winners and two World Series champions, and later became the first Black manager of a Triple-A club, piloting the Buffalo Bisons in 1969. He died September 29, 2022, at 93.
