1966 Topps #205 Tom Tresh

About Tom Tresh
Card #205 comes out of the third series of the 1966 set, and it also exists in the scarcer 1966 Topps Venezuelan issue. The 1965 season behind it was Tresh's best all-around year: a .279 average, 26 home runs, 74 RBI and career highs of 29 doubles and six triples, plus a Gold Glove for outfield work manager Johnny Keane spread across center, left and right. On June 6 he homered in each of his first three at-bats against the White Sox in a 12-0 rout, the first right-handed and the next two from the left side. The Yankees, though, finished sixth, their first season without a pennant since 1959.
Tom Tresh was a switch-hitting shortstop and outfielder who played nine big-league seasons, 1961 through 1969, with the New York Yankees until a midseason 1969 trade sent him home to the Detroit Tigers. Born in Detroit, the son of big-league catcher Mike Tresh, he starred at Allen Park High School and went back to Central Michigan University every off-season until he had his physical education degree. Named the International League's Rookie of the Year at Richmond in 1961, he took the Yankees' shortstop job the next spring while Tony Kubek served a National Guard call-up, hit .286 with 20 home runs and 93 runs batted in, and was voted American League Rookie of the Year by both the Baseball Writers and The Sporting News. His three-run homer off Jack Sanford broke an eighth-inning tie in Game Five of the 1962 World Series, and New York beat San Francisco in seven. Tresh was an All-Star in 1962 and 1963 and won a Gold Glove for his outfield work in 1965, but a right knee injury in 1967 spring training drained his speed and power; Detroit released him in the spring of 1970 at 31. He later worked at his alma mater, helped invent a sliding-technique training aid, and died in Venice, Florida, in 2008.

Where SGC registers no separate row for a variation state, its slabs of that card are listed under the base state.
