1966 Topps #31 Jack Cullen

About Jack Cullen
Card #31 belongs to the 1966 first series: by then Cullen was 26 and in his third big-league season, pictured as a New York Yankee while he was still on the roster. He got five turns that spring, all in relief, the best of them seven scoreless innings on May 1 that made him the winner of a 10-4 decision over the Kansas City Athletics. His final major league appearance came May 5, after which New York sent him back to Triple-A. He finished the year 1-0 with a 3.97 ERA and seven strikeouts in 11 1/3 innings for a club that placed last in the American League for the first time since 1912.
Right-handed pitcher John Patrick Cullen was born October 6, 1939 in Newark, New Jersey, and raised in nearby Belleville, where he played prep baseball at Belleville High School. A bird-dog scout sent him to a Yankee Stadium tryout camp after graduation, and the 5-foot-11 right-hander, who also attended Fairleigh Dickinson University, signed with New York in 1959 and won 11 or more games in each of his first four professional seasons. He debuted September 9, 1962 against the Boston Red Sox and threw three shutout relief innings over two September outings, earning the only save of his career; the Yankees went on to win the World Series without him on the postseason roster. Cullen then spent all of 1963 and 1964 and half of 1965 at Triple-A before a July recall put him in the New York rotation. In 19 big-league games, all for the Yankees, he went 4-4 with a 3.07 ERA and 34 strikeouts in 73 1/3 innings. After a last appearance on May 5, 1966 he pitched through 1970 in the Yankees, Los Angeles Dodgers and Atlanta Braves farm systems.

Where SGC registers no separate row for a variation state, its slabs of that card are listed under the base state.
