The story on this card
Beck's lone big league trial came in September 1965 with the Yankees, when he went 2-1 with a 2.14 ERA over three starts, including a win over Washington and a shutout of Detroit at Yankee Stadium. This 1966 Topps card is a recognized rookie card, part of the multi-player Rookie Stars subset issued in the set's third print series, pairing Beck with fellow Yankees prospect Roy White, who also represents New York on the card. Right-hander out of Pasco, Washington, and Gonzaga University who reached the Yankees for a brief but promising September trial in 1965 after a standout season pitching for their Double-A club in Columbus, Georgia.
White entered 1966 as a promising 22-year-old, having won the James P. Dawson Award as the Yankees' top rookie in spring training. He started hot, batting .290 with five home runs through the season's first six weeks, but a stretch of trying to pull pitches toward Yankee Stadium's short right-field porch led to a slump, and he closed the year at .225 with 7 home runs and 20 RBI as the club fell to last place. His 1966 Topps #234, from the third series, is his rookie card, shared with Rich Beck in the multi-player Rookie Stars subset. A switch-hitting Yankees outfielder for all 15 of his big-league seasons, Roy White grew into an everyday left fielder and two-time All-Star before winning back-to-back titles in 1977-78.
