1966 Topps #32 Adolfo Phillips

About Adolfo Phillips
1966 Topps #32, part of the set's first print series, pictures Phillips with the Philadelphia Phillies, but his season there was brief: after only two games he was dealt that April to the Chicago Cubs in the trade that also sent Ferguson Jenkins to Chicago. Under new manager Leo Durocher he became an everyday center fielder, finishing the season with a .260 average, 16 home runs and 32 stolen bases and drawing praise from Durocher as one of the National League's best defensive outfielders. This is a recognized rookie card for Phillips.
Adolfo Phillips, a Panamanian center fielder from Bethania, signed with the Phillies in 1960 and tore through the minors, twice topping .300 with power and speed. He debuted with Philadelphia in September 1964, then was traded to the Chicago Cubs in April 1966 in a deal that also sent Ferguson Jenkins to Chicago. Manager Leo Durocher praised his talent and installed him as an everyday center fielder, and Phillips rewarded him with his finest season in 1967, setting a National League record with 29 intentional walks. Durocher and Phillips clashed repeatedly over hustle and mental errors, and the relationship soured before Phillips was traded to the expansion Montreal Expos in June 1969. He finished his career with Cleveland in 1972, then continued playing in the Mexican League through the mid-1970s. Career totals: .247 average, 59 home runs, 173 RBI and 82 stolen bases over parts of eight seasons.
