The story on this card
Card #254 is Jenkins' rookie card and one of the 1966 set's three Hall of Fame rookie cards, a third-series Phillies Rookie Stars pairing shared with Bill Sorrell. Topps still had Jenkins in Philadelphia, though the Phillies had already traded him to Chicago on April 21, 1966, sending him along with Adolfo Phillips and John Herrnstein for Larry Jackson and Bob Buhl. All he had pitched in the majors to that point was seven relief games. Fergie Jenkins was the control artist at the front of the Cubs rotation, winning 20 games in six straight seasons and the 1971 National League Cy Young Award on his way to 284 wins, 3,192 strikeouts and a 1991 Hall of Fame plaque.
Card #254 in the 1966 Topps set pairs Sorrell with Ferguson Jenkins on a Phillies Rookie Stars card from the third series - a mid-run card. Both men were Tony Lucadello signings, and both reached Philadelphia together when rosters expanded in September 1965; Sorrell's ten-game trial produced five hits, a .385 average and a 13th-inning home run on the last day of the season. It is one of the key rookie cards of the set, and the reason is the other name on it: Jenkins went to Cooperstown. Sorrell made the 1966 Opening Day roster but was optioned to Triple-A San Diego inside the first week and never got into a game that year. Third baseman and outfielder from Morehead, Kentucky who played parts of three big-league seasons between 1965 and 1970 for the Phillies, Giants and Royals, then two more in Japan with the Hankyu Braves.
