The story on this card
Card #52 in Topps' 1966 series 1 pairs Wes Covington and Johnny Callison as "Power Plus," a combination card built around the punch both men supplied for the Phillies lineup. Covington, the veteran left-handed slugger, had settled into a platoon and pinch-hit role after arriving in Philadelphia during the 1961 season, still capable of turning on a fastball even as knee trouble limited his outfield time. Callison, the younger right fielder with the strong throwing arm, was coming off his signature 1965 season: a league-leading 16 triples, 32 home runs, and 101 RBI, on the heels of his walk-off, MVP-winning home run in the 1964 All-Star Game. Both wear Phillies caps on the card, and the two-man format let Topps pair an established power bat with the team's emerging offensive star.
Wes Covington was a left-handed slugging outfielder who helped Milwaukee beat the Yankees in the 1957 World Series and hit .330 the next summer, then spent five seasons platooning in left field for the Phillies. Johnny Callison, the Phillies' All-Star right fielder of the 1960s, a left-handed bat and a cannon arm whose ninth-inning three-run homer won the 1964 All-Star Game at Shea Stadium and earned him the game's MVP award.
