About Richie Allen

Card #80 sits in the first series and reports the 1965 season behind it: .302 with 20 home runs and 85 RBI, and Allen's first All-Star selection, as the National League's starting third baseman. That summer had a darker side. During batting practice on July 3, after a racially loaded crack from teammate Frank Thomas, Allen punched him and Thomas answered with a bat to the shoulder. The Phillies waived Thomas that night and forbade Allen to give his side, and much of the crowd blamed him after.

Richard Anthony Allen was one of the most feared hitters of the 1960s and early 1970s, a 15-season major leaguer (1963-1977) who played for the Philadelphia Phillies, St. Louis Cardinals, Los Angeles Dodgers, Chicago White Sox and Oakland Athletics after the Phillies signed him out of Wampum, Pennsylvania in 1960 for a reported $70,000. Topps called him Richie Allen all decade, though family and friends had always called him Dick, and he asked the writers to use it. He broke in with one of the great rookie seasons on record, batting .318 in 1964 with a league-leading 125 runs, 13 triples and 352 total bases to win National League Rookie of the Year. Philadelphia fans turned on him anyway, showering him with fruit, ice and flashlight batteries until he took his position wearing his batting helmet, which is where the nickname Crash came from. He made seven All-Star teams, led a league in slugging percentage three times, and won the 1972 American League Most Valuable Player award with the White Sox after pacing the league in home runs, RBI, walks and on-base percentage. He finished with 351 home runs, a .534 slugging percentage and a 156 OPS+ across 1,749 games. Allen died in 2020 and was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2025.
