About Ken Boyer

Boyer's single 1966 Topps card, number 385 in the fifth series, is the first to list him with a club other than the Cardinals. It is a plain base card. The 1965 season behind it was his last in St. Louis and his quietest there: back trouble held him to 144 games and a .260 average with 13 home runs and 75 RBI, though he still led National League third basemen in fielding at .968, the only time he managed that. In October the Cardinals traded him to the New York Mets for third baseman Charley Smith and pitcher Al Jackson, closing an 11-year run in St. Louis.

Ken Boyer played 15 major league seasons from 1955 to 1969, 11 of them in St. Louis, where he held third base every year but 1957, when he volunteered for center field so a rookie could have the infield job. Signed out of Alba High School in 1949 as a pitcher, he was moved to third in the minors once his bat outran his arm; brothers Cloyd and Clete also reached the majors. He was named to 11 All-Star squads across seven seasons, won five Gold Gloves, captained the Cardinals from 1959, and hit for the cycle twice. His 1964 was the career year: .295 with 185 hits, 24 homers and a league-leading 119 RBI, the National League Most Valuable Player award, and a pennant St. Louis chased down in the final week. In the World Series he hit a Game 4 grand slam off Al Downing and homered again in Game 7, the same game his brother Clete went deep for the Yankees. He finished with 2,143 hits, 282 home runs and a .287 average, managed the Cardinals from 1978 to 1980, and had his number 14 retired in 1984. Never elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame, he entered the St. Louis Cardinals Hall of Fame in 2014. He died of lung cancer in 1982 at 51.

Where SGC registers no separate row for a variation state, its slabs of that card are listed under the base state.
