The story on this card
May split 1966 between Cincinnati and the Reds' new Triple-A club in Buffalo, batting .333 with two home runs in a limited 25-game trial after losing the first-base job to Tony Perez in spring training. His first major league home run came that September at Crosley Field off the Mets' Bob Shaw. This card is a Rookie Stars issue from Topps' fifth print series, pairing May with fellow Reds prospect Darrell Osteen, and stands as a recognized rookie card for the future slugger. A powerful right-handed first baseman for the Reds, Astros, Orioles and Royals, Lee May hit 354 career home runs and posted 100-RBI seasons for three different franchises.
In 1966, his second season with the Reds, Osteen appeared in 13 games covering 15 innings, going 0-2 with a 12.00 ERA and one save. Topps included him on card #424 in the fifth series of its 1966 set, a Cincinnati Reds Rookie Stars card he shares with fellow Reds rookie Lee May; the card is recognized as Osteen's rookie card. Right-handed reliever Darrell Osteen pitched for the Cincinnati Reds (1965-67) and Oakland Athletics (1970), posting a 1-4 career record over 29 games; he is not a Hall of Famer.
