The story on this card
Card 396 pairs two Atlanta Braves teammates and roommates who had made headlines together in 1966, when Tony Cloninger hit two grand slams in one game using a bat borrowed from Denis Menke. Menke, the club's shortstop, came off a 1966 season batting .251 with 15 home runs and 60 RBI; in 1967, playing almost exclusively at shortstop, he hit .227 with 7 home runs and 39 RBI through an injury-plagued September, for a Braves team that suffered its first losing season in fifteen years. Cloninger, the staff's ace in 1965 with 24 wins, was sidelined for much of 1967 by a shoulder pull, an eye ailment, and a sore elbow, finishing 4-7 in 16 games with a 5.17 ERA. The card groups the pair as Atlanta Braves teammates rather than marking one feat.
An Iowa farm boy who signed for one of the biggest bonuses of the pre-draft era, Denis Menke played all four infield positions across 13 seasons and made the National League All-Star team twice as Houston's shortstop. Tony Cloninger was Milwaukee's power-armed staff ace, a 24-game winner in 1965, and the only pitcher in major-league history to hit two grand slams in one game - nine RBIs against the Giants on July 3, 1966.
