About Chris Short

Short entered 1967 fresh off consecutive big seasons, but a knee injury suffered in a batting-practice collision with teammate Doug Clemens cost him roughly six weeks that year. He still finished 9-11 with a sharp 2.39 ERA over 26 starts, and was named to his second career All-Star team. This card, #395 in the fifth print series, is recognized as his rookie card and pictures him with the Phillies.

Chris Short was a hard-throwing left-hander who spent nearly his entire fifteen-year career with the Philadelphia Phillies, debuting in 1959 and pitching through 1972 before finishing up with the Milwaukee Brewers in 1973. A native of Milford, Delaware, the six-foot-four southpaw struggled with control early on before blossoming into one of the National League's top pitchers from 1964 through 1968, averaging better than 250 innings and 17 wins a season during that stretch. His best year came in 1964, when he went 17-9 with a career-best 2.20 ERA, though the Phillies' historic late-season collapse overshadowed the individual performance. He won 20 games in 1966 and finished his career with 135 wins, a 3.43 ERA, and 1,629 strikeouts. A two-time All-Star, Short was known in the clubhouse by the nickname "Styles." He died in 1991 and is not a National Baseball Hall of Fame inductee, though he was later inducted into the Delaware Sports Hall of Fame.
