1967 Topps #595 Cookie Rojas

About Cookie Rojas
Rojas' solo card #595 falls in the 1967 set's seventh series, a high number. It reports his 1966 season, a career-high 156 games split mostly between second base and the outfield, with his average settling at .268 as the Phillies finished fourth at 87-75, eight games behind the pennant-winning Dodgers.
Octavio Victor (Rivas) Rojas was born March 6, 1939, in Havana, Cuba, and signed with the Cincinnati Reds in 1956 at age 17, climbing through their system to the Triple-A Havana Sugar Kings. He debuted in the majors on April 10, 1962, then was traded to the Philadelphia Phillies for pitcher Jim Owens and spent 1963-1969 as Philadelphia's do-everything infielder-outfielder. Rojas is one of a handful of major leaguers to have played every position on the field, including pitcher, and the only one of that group to also make both the National League and American League All-Star teams; he was a five-time All-Star, once with the 1965 Phillies and four straight years (1971-1974) with the Kansas City Royals after a brief stop with the St. Louis Cardinals. In the 1972 All-Star Game he hit a pinch-hit home run, the first by a foreign-born player for the American League in the game's history. Over 16 seasons he batted .263 with 1,660 hits, 54 home runs and 593 RBI in 1,822 games. He later managed the California Angels, coached for four other clubs, and broadcast Marlins games. His mother's nickname for him, 'Cuqui,' became 'Cookie' in pro ball. He belongs to Cuba's Baseball Hall of Fame and the Royals Hall of Fame (1987), not the National Baseball Hall of Fame.

Frequently asked questions
What is the 1967 Topps #595 card?
It is card #595 of the 609-card 1967 Topps Baseball set, picturing Cookie Rojas of the Philadelphia Phillies.
Why is #595 harder to find?
It is a high number card from the seventh and last print series, #534-609 - the scarce end of the set, holding both Hall of Fame rookies (Carew #569, Seaver #581). Twenty-two of the 76 are accepted double prints, so scarcity varies card by card inside the run.
