1967 Topps #489 Doug Clemens

About Doug Clemens
Card #489 in Topps' sixth 1967 series doubles as Doug Clemens' rookie card. It arrived during his second season with the Philadelphia Phillies, where his playing time had shifted mostly to pinch-hitting; in 1967 he appeared in 69 games, batting .178 with 4 RBI and starting only 10 in the outfield as his role settled further into that of a bench specialist.
Doug Clemens was an outfielder who spent parts of nine major league seasons, 1960 through 1968, with the St. Louis Cardinals, Chicago Cubs and Philadelphia Phillies. A Pennsylvania native who starred in football and baseball at Muhlenberg High School under his father, coach Lloyd Scoop Clemens, he won a football scholarship to Syracuse University before a knee injury shifted him toward baseball, where he lettered in 1959 and 1960. He signed with the Cardinals in 1960 and reached the majors that October. A left-handed hitting outfielder, Clemens became known league-wide as a pinch-hitting specialist later in his career, once leading the majors in pinch-hit appearances in a single season. He is remembered as part of the June 1964 trade that sent him, Bobby Shantz and Ernie Broglio to the Cubs in exchange for outfielder Lou Brock. Over 452 career games he batted .229 with 211 hits, 12 home runs and 88 RBI. After his playing days, Clemens earned bachelor's and master's degrees from Syracuse and moved into business, eventually becoming a vice president of sales and marketing for a manufacturing company.
