1967 Topps #495 Fritz Peterson

About Fritz Peterson
After a rough 0-8 start, Peterson's manager reset his record for the rest of the season, and he closed 1967 at 8-14 with a 3.47 ERA and 102 strikeouts as New York's rotation mainstay, logging six complete games and a shutout over 181.1 innings. Card #495 places him with the Yankees in the set's sixth series.
Fritz Peterson was a left-handed pitcher who spent 1966 to 1976 in the majors with the New York Yankees, Cleveland Indians and Texas Rangers. Signed by the Yankees as an amateur free agent in 1963 out of Northern Illinois University, he became a mainstay of the New York rotation, winning at least 12 games in five straight seasons and posting a career record of 133-131. His best year came in 1970, when he went 20-11 and earned his only All-Star selection. Peterson led the American League in fewest walks per nine innings five years running, 1968 through 1972, and his lifetime ERA at the original Yankee Stadium was the best of any Yankee who pitched there. Traded to Cleveland in April 1974, he pitched two more seasons before finishing his career with the Rangers in 1976. He never appeared in a postseason game.
