1967 Topps #496 Orlando McFarlane

About Orlando McFarlane
Detroit sold McFarlane to California on April 10, 1967, and two days later he was in a game against his old Tigers club. The stay was short. He got into 12 games between April 12 and June 3, collecting five singles and three RBI in 22 at-bats for a .227 average with no extra-base hits, and spent the balance of the year in the minors. Topps caught up with the move in time: #496 lists him with the California Angels. The card comes from the sixth series.
Orlando de Jesus McFarlane Quesada was a Cuban catcher, born in Victoria de las Tunas and signed by the Pittsburgh Pirates as an amateur free agent in 1958. He spent two seasons in the Pirates farm system, then caught for Almendares in the Cuban League in the 1959-60 and 1960-61 winters. When the Cuban government replaced the professional league with amateur baseball, he moved to the United States for good. In 1961 he hit .301 with 21 home runs and 27 stolen bases for the Class A Asheville Tourists and was named the best prospect in the South Atlantic League. He debuted with Pittsburgh on April 23, 1962 and played parts of five big-league seasons through 1968 for the Pirates, Detroit Tigers and California Angels, batting .240 with five home runs in 124 games while spending much of that span in the minors. Across ten minor league seasons he hit .285 with 129 home runs. He twice led the Dominican winter league in home runs for the Aguilas Cibaenas, also played in Venezuela, and settled in Ponce, Puerto Rico, where he caught for the Leones, was married at their ballpark, and died in 2007.
