About Ron Campbell

Card #497 in Topps' sixth print series, Campbell's recognized rookie card, arrives after his rookie 1964 season with the Chicago Cubs, when he hit .272 with 10 RBI in 92 at-bats while starting at second base alongside Billy Williams and Ernie Banks. He followed that with a brief 1965 and a 1966 return that saw him shift to third base and shortstop for Chicago.

Ron Campbell was a right-handed infielder who signed with the Chicago Cubs as a free agent in 1960 after time at Tennessee Wesleyan College, then spent several seasons in the minors before his major league debut on September 1, 1964. He made an immediate mark that September, picking up his first hit and RBI off Cincinnati's John Tsitouris in a game the Cubs won 3-0, then took over most of the remaining starts at second base in place of Joey Amalfitano, playing alongside Billy Williams and Ernie Banks. He hit his only career home run that month off the Cardinals' Ray Sadecki and finished the 1964 season batting .272 in 92 at-bats. Campbell appeared in just two games in 1965 before returning to the Cubs for two stints in 1966, filling in at third base and shortstop behind Ron Santo and Don Kessinger. He closed out his big-league career on September 28, 1966, with a three-hit game against the New York Mets. Over three seasons, all with the Cubs, he batted .247 with one home run and 14 RBI.
