The story on this card
Card 309 in Topps' fourth series pairs Phillies right fielder Johnny Callison and third baseman Richie Allen under the title Hurlers Beware, casting the two as the bats National League pitchers most dreaded facing. Both came off strong 1966 seasons: Callison led the NL with 40 doubles, while Allen, just three years removed from his 1964 NL Rookie of the Year season, topped the league in slugging percentage and extra-base hits. Callison had anchored the Phillies outfield since 1960; the club signed Allen out of high school that same year and brought him to the majors in 1963. The pairing echoed the one-two punch the two gave Philadelphia, including during its infamous 1964 late-season collapse.
Johnny Callison, the Phillies' All-Star right fielder of the 1960s, a left-handed bat and a cannon arm whose ninth-inning three-run homer won the 1964 All-Star Game at Shea Stadium and earned him the game's MVP award. Richie Allen - Philadelphia's young slugger, the 1964 National League Rookie of the Year and the 1972 American League Most Valuable Player with the White Sox, a seven-time All-Star who took his position in a batting helmet and became Crash.
