The story on this card
Bill Davis's 1967 Topps card is a third-series Cleveland Indians Rookie Stars issue, shared with Gus Gil, and is Gil's rookie card; Davis had already appeared on 1965 Topps #546. It reports Davis's abbreviated 1966 season, the last stats Topps had on hand, because Davis spent the entire 1967 campaign sidelined after rupturing his Achilles tendon in a January pick-up basketball game, a season-ending injury that cost him his best shot at Cleveland's starting first-base job. A 6-foot-7 first baseman from Minnesota who reached the majors with Cleveland in 1965, Davis hit his only career home run as a pinch hitter in 1966 and started the Padres' first-ever regular season game in 1969.
1967 Topps #253, part of the card's third print series, is a Cleveland Indians Rookie Stars card shared with Bill Davis -- Gil's rookie card. It arrives during his first big league season: the 27-year-old second baseman opened at the position on Opening Day and started Cleveland's first 19 games, finishing with a .115 average in 51 games (96 at-bats, 5 RBI, 11 runs), playing 49 games at second base and one at first. Venezuelan second baseman whose glove far outran his bat over four big league seasons with Cleveland, Seattle, and Milwaukee; a .982 fielding percentage and a long, decorated career in Venezuelan winter ball.
